I am a professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics at Virginia Tech and the director of the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab. My research focuses on head impact biomechanics and the effectiveness of protective equipment. My group develops risk functions, test methods, and helmet rating systems that translate biomechanics into practical guidance for athletes, workers, and manufacturers.

Our STAR helmet ratings are used by major manufacturers and retailers, and they inform consumer decisions and product design across sports and occupational settings. Current projects include construction helmet performance for falls, youth sport head protection, catcher mask impacts, drone injury risk, and fall detection and injury prevention in older adults.

I have authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, with over 9,500 citations, and have served as principal investigator or co-investigator on more than $18 million in funded research. I am a Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors and serve on the Scientific Advisory Committee for the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment.
